Walter Peterson of the 187th airborne Korea 1952/53 suggested I contact you regarding my father, William Edward Miller, Jr. (Billy). My father was in Korea in the 50’s. He passed away in 1972 when I was 6 years old. I’m trying out if anyone in the 187th knows him (Mr. Peterson did not). I was told that he was a member of the 187th, but I just found out his records were destroyed in the fire during the 70s.

My name is Robert Nay. I am active duty chaplain presently stationed at Fort Irwin, California. I am also a military historian (5X identifier), and I written on the history of the chaplaincy.
I just received the diary of Chaplain Robert Rayburn. He was with the 187th RCT in Korea. Also, his first two jumps were combat jumps!!! I am also in contact with his assistant, Cliff Brewton. Cliff taught his chaplain how to jump.
Robert Rayburn wrote a book called Fight the good fight. The book presents his experiences as a spiritual lesson. I want to write about their experiences from a military/teamwork perspective. Robert and Cliff were an awesome team.
Do you have the contact information for any of the 187th RCT chaplains or assistants? Do you know where the war diaries for the 187th RCT are kept? Any other direction you could point me in would be a great help.

I would like to know more about this regiment as my son has been assigned to and will deploy to Afghanistan in February. He is an E5 and very dedicated to his service. I am very proud of him, as I am of all who have, are, and will serve in our military. May all of our soldiers come home safe. This is my Christmas wish. He may have been from New York. I’m not sure if you can help me or not but I thought I would give it a shot. Thank you sir also for your service to our great country. Regards, 1st Lt. Colin J. Entry: 74597 187th RCT Sgt. Major Peter Roper
Dennis Ruvolo wrote on 2010-05-05 19:52:00.0
Comments: The following information was taken from a card I received from the Sgt Major’s daughter, Trudy Charlton, informing me of his passing. A few years back Pete had contacted me at a friends request to finally solve the mystery on how my Uncle SGT Larry Ruvolo was KIA in Korea in the Battle for Inje, May 23, 1951 while serving in the 187th E-Company 4th Platoon. I feel I owe it to him to post this information. Rest easy Sgt. Major.
Sgt Major Peter R. Roper passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 24,2010 at Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe, Louisiana. He entered military service in 1940, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Volunteered for active duty at the start of WWII and served in the Marines on Guadacanal, Okinawa and other undisclosed places. He achieved the rank of sergeant while serving with the fleet Marine Force in the pacific in 1946. He was discharged from the Marines in 1947 at the end of his enlistment. Within a year he enlisted in the United States Army and remained in the Army until retirement in 1969. While in the Army he became a Paratrooper proudly serving with the 187th ARCT and with the 101st. During the Korean conflict he was one of a few paratroopers who jumped behind enemy lines in an attempt to rescue captured soldiers. The rescue attempt was too late and the soldiers they were sent to rescue had been executed. They had to make their way back to their line. He saw combat again in Vietnam serving with the Big Red One as a Command Sergeant Major, achieving the rank of E-9 in 1960 stationed in Germany with the 8th Infantry. He was one of the first two non-commissioned officers to receive this newly established rank. Pete retired from active duty while stationed at Fort Ord Ca. He resided in nearby Marina Ca. After Fort Ord hospital closed he and his wife Lola moved to Rayville, La. to be near the military hospital in Shreveport so his wife could receive medical care. He remained in Rayville following her death. Peter came down with Parkinsons disease and moved to the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in April 2009 where he received excellent care around the clock. His daughters were his advocates to the end seeing that his personal choices were met to the best of the ability of the NLWVA. Peter did leave the nurses with some amusing stories. Pete received Bronze Star Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, the ND service good conduct medal 6th award, Korean Service Medal AOM Japan, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, , Purple heart with 2 clusters, republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. Sergeant Major Roper will be remembered as a man who loved his country, his family, a dedicated NCO and patriotic American.

Great Trooper website! Love your Rakkasan spirit. I served in Support Co. 1953-1954, Camp Wood, Japan. Joined the 187th in Korea just before the signing of the armistice. Prior to the 187th I was with the 82nd, Fort Bragg, N.C. 1952-1953. I had to volunteer for Korea to join the 187th! Your site brings back a lot of memories of military service. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the memories.

To SFC Brockman…My uncle, Nacario Aguilar was stationed with you in Lebanon in 1958. By way of Germany and Turkey. He has been trying to make contact with you. I am his nephew and was able to get on a few websites concerning B Co. 187th Airborne Battle Group. The squad leader of his platoon was Sgt.Smart. If either one of you are alive and well enough to remember the year 1958 and Lebanon, we would appreciate a reply. We are hoping that you are indeed well. Thank You, Ray

Does any one know who this is. He is wearing the hat patch of the many heroes of our Golden Rakkasans. I am somewhat amazed that he uses his personal views in a disruption to such an important event to other people it can & may turn people and statesmen unnecessaraly against us as a whole. It is best I always think that this is a kick in the throat to the Golden Rakkasans. Our personal views should not be backed by using the Heroes who fought for our Country. Say what you MAY BUT NOT Under the seal of all our Heros. I have given many years to Honor or Troopers and this is deplorable behavior that to me is unbecoming of our Military Heros. Bob

Last year I did a search on “RAKKASAN” for my father, who doesn’t have a computer. He was in the 11th Airborne, 187th RCT as part of the occupation force in Japan. Years of service were 1945-48. He was one of the hosts of the 11th Airborne Division Reunion in Omaha, Ne. in 1997 and currently subscribes to “SHIMBUN”. As I said, he doesn’t own a computer so I have to send messages and updates from and about fellow RAKKASANS to him via e-mail to my brother, who lives in Omaha. My father is very interested in maintaining his connection to his military heritage. He does so through me, his oldest son. Though I was never in the military, I appreciate the sacrifices, the traditions and the honor you all have earned for those sacrifices in the service of your country. I am proud to be the son of a WWII veteran RAKKASAN!!! Michael Lanspa

Hi Bob (and all you famous “Rakkasans”), from the other side of the pond, here in Scotland. Its always great to see another Airborne site on the web. The Airborne’s history will always live whilst there are guys like yourself to keep it going! The Airborne Brotherhood is certainly the section of society to be a part of. Best wishes to you ALL…!! John Dingwall (Chairman Lothian Branch)
Through all the years that passed for me, I always held my head up high knowing I was Airborne. I wrote the stories to help keep Airborne alive and be a part of not only yesterday, but forever. Freedom is a word used carelessly, and often taken lightly and for those who fought and died for it they are taken for granted. The dreams of the many who passed into this great country are still realized because of these soldiers of yesterday, and our flag is representative of those soldiers of America’s yesterday that fought, some giving their all, others marked with physical injury, but all with the mental scars of war that never go away. Keep both the flag and soldier together as the symbol say one see both, they belong as one forever together. “AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY” “RAKKASANS FOREVER” Secretary Big Apple Chapter of the Rakkasans 187ARCT Inc

Hi Troopers, I just received this site from Robert Hodgson tonight. I am an old Trooper who spent his entire enlistment (after Basic training) with the 11th, both At Fort Campbell and Munich Germany. Although I was in the 88th AAA Battalion for most of my time, then to the 503rd when the 11th went thru some kind of new concept called “Pentomic” what ever the hell that meant. Anyway, I enjoyed this site, and look forward to visiting it many times online.
I, too, was a Rakkasan and very proud of the fact to have served with Co. B 3/187th in Vietnam Mar. 68- Mar. 69. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who served in our company during that time period. And, yes, you do have a very impressive site. Keep up the good work. Had a friend from the Big Apple area. Tom Weigold, get in touch. Thanks again for keeping the Rakkasan alive and well.

Sir: I’m looking for anyone who might have served with Howard Dreyer early in 1951. The unit was 187th ARCT CO B. Howard was killed 5-1-1951 near Inji. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions that morning. A field house was named in his honor at Fort Campbell and on June 1 2001 there is going to be a rededication of the building. I have been trying to contact someone who might have known him for they might be interested in going. Howard covered a retreat at about 3 AM that morning on Hill 425, I think, and later volunteered to counterattack and was killed later that morning. I don’t have a lot of information on the movements of the 187th, but I think I found that that the 187th was relieved about 10AM that morning by the 25 Inf. so he was a very short timer. A worker at Dreyer Hall saw a posting I put on Hal Barker’s website and contacted me asking if we had a picture or any information they could hang in the hall, which we are taking to them. Any help anyone could give us would greatly be appreciated, hopefully we can find some of his unit.

Dear 187th, I have been researching the circumstances of the death of my uncle. I have found his grave at Arlington. He died in action on July 15, 1953 in Korea according to his headstone. I want to communicate with anyone that knew him or witnessed his death. His sister (my mother) is living and wants to know all. Her father kept the truth from her. Till recently she believed he was never found so somehow hopeful that he could be living. I can’t find any government agencies that will reveal the facts. Maybe one of his comrades remembers. He was a sergeant 1st class. Please respond. Alfred Sigfred Jordan, New York,SFC,187 ABN RCT WW2,Korea born 1-18-1920 died 1-18-1953 P/T his headstone spells his middle name Sigrid which is incorrect

SFC Brockman Platton leader and SFC Ramsey Jumpmaster, we made the blast in the hot salty air of the Med Sea, I landed in the white sand near a skeleton of a Camel, the bare bones were all white. Remember the color guard (187th drill team) at the soccer stadium, I was a part of that drill team. We did not win the Competition, the 11th Cav did. We all thought and hoped to be the first in Beirut by parachuting in under fire. Not to be, we air landed after the Marines beached in the shores of Beirut. Hope to make contact with you in September at 11th ABN reunion.

Bob you did one hell of a job of picture taking at Ft. Mitchell 8/01. I was indeed impressed with your dedication. What also surprised me was your trying to fill in the blanks of your warrior days with the Rakkasans. We may have been in the same company but separated by one year. A fellow Rakkasan friend pointed this site out to me. He mentioned that there is a need for younger ex-soldiers to carry the colors etc. As we both served in the Rakkasans I thought we should introduce ourselves and see what we could do to help.
Please give me a call at my Tel# during normal business hours. If you don’t get me, leave a message and I will call you back.

As a proud son of a Rakkasan, let me just say the pride I feel for my father, Carter L Glass (3rd.bat 187th) and all the veterans of the forgotten war. As a veteran myself and growing up an Army brat, it is great to see how much support there is for those who gave so much and got so little in return. I for one will never forget and always honor all of you. God bless you all.
Dear Sir: After Basic Training, AIT, and Jump School, I was assigned to the 1st Airborne Battle Group of the 187th of the 82nd Airborne Division. This was in December of 1963. To be a RAKKASAN was the proudest time of my life as a Paratrooper. Coming from Spanish Harlem (better known as “El Barrio”) to the Airborne was a big accomplishment for me. I was at this time just out of High School and only 18 years of age. The Army decided to go back to the Battalion System and did away with the idea of Battle Groups. The colors of the RAKKASANS was sent to the 101st Airborne Division at the end of 1964. That is how I was taken away from the outfit closest to my heart. Only an old RAKKASAN would understand the feeling of being a RAKKASAN. I just found this website by accident, but I want to thank you for the good memories we all RAKKASAN share. With my deepest respect thank you for this site. Once a RAKKASAN ALWAYS A RAKKASAN.

I feel that it is a very impressive site and does justice the the unit and the people it represents. I am researching the time of service of my brother-in-law Sgt Andrew Ricciardelli, of Brooklyn NY who served with the 187th from 1950 to 1953. His widow, my sister, would like any decorations for his grandchildren. How do I go about getting them for the family. I am writing a book of hero’s I have known connected with that forgotten war. I have 20 chapters written about a high school graduate friend who was WIA in Korea. Can you help?
Thank you for sharing your photo’s and thoughts. My husband, Joseph Farrell was a Rakkasan he was attached to the 187th RCT Co. I – Korea 1953 – 1954 He became a NYC Fire Fighter and served 28 years with the NYFD. God Bless you all.
I’m the son of Jerome Gilmore, my dad joined in ’48. He has told us some of the events he was involved with in Korea, but he has made no effort in contacting any other 187th combat vets. Anyone who may have known my father can contact me at the email listed. Many thanks to the 187th RCT.

Rakkasans, I want to share this message from Col. Wiercinski with you. It concerns the Canadian Troopers attached to the Rakkasan Brigade who were killed and wounded by friendly fire.
Capt. Gallo, I wish to send my condolences to the families of those brave Canadian Troopers who lost their lives in the bombing incident. It troubles me to hear of mistakes like this that takes the lives of our heroes. To those injured we have added their names to our prayer list and pray for their full recovery. Please convey this message if you can.
We stand as brothers with one cause. Peace and Liberty for all.

The website was great and helpful. My father recently passed on and I’ve been doing homework on his units histories as he was always (like never) reluctant to talk about the combat he was in. He always told my brother and I how much he loved his airborne days and his buddies (His combat infantryman’s badge and jump wings were with him always.) He was part of the 187th airborne RCT throughout the Korean war before Ranger school in the late 50’s and then to Vietnam before retiring in ’66. His name was Msgt. John “Spider” Downer (From New Hamburg, NY) and he was and always will be my hero and inspiration. Knowing more about the 187th and its traditions make me even prouder to be his son. Thanks again for the keeping the website going. Pat Downer CDR, USNR-ret. USNA – 1977

I’m looking for the jumpmaster who was in the lead plane at Sukchon. I was the only movie combat photographer who went in with them. I never jumped before. Later I was made a member of 187 by General Ridgeway. I was also awarded the Bronze Star for the jump. This jumpmaster carried my camera down because I did not know what to do. The movies I took were used in many training films and also shown in all the news of that time. I would like to know his name or any other paratroopers on that plane. They were very concerned about my safety and gave me a lot of hints about what to do. I would like to thank and meet them. Len Totora.
Just wondered into your web site and enjoyed it very much. I would normally not write but I wanted to pass along two names that I did not see among the fallen Rakkasans. They are Sp4 Raymers (KIA 8/8/70) and Sgt. Fako (KIA 10/15/70) both were members of Delta Co., 3/187. Please pass this information along to the proper person to see that their names are added to the listing.
Dear Bob I am writing to you about the parade this year for the veterans. I have a suggestion this year for all. I know everybody hates to admit it but everybody is getting older it is a little harder to make the march so I am inclined to think that some guys will not come because they are embarrassed or concerned they cannot make the long walk so they do not come. My Dad is the one telling me about the parade so I have not seen it in person. If you could provide a flat bed trailer and put a couple of banners on it and let these guys sit on it you might get a bigger turn out. I have participated in other parades in my home town with little leaguers and such we did not have to get anything special, just a truck with a ball hitch to pull the trailer and all worked out. It would be easier for the gentlemen and give them the chance to decide if they wanted to walk along side or ride and if they get tired they could just sit on the float (trailer). Just a thought. Thank You for your time. Yours Truly, Rick Scott
Subj: MG Robert Clark Promotion Threatened …Fellow Rakkasans: Attached is an article taken from today’s Nashville Tennessean relative to an effort by the Service members Legal Defense Network (SLDN) to block the promotion of MG Clark to Lt. Gen. MG Clark is a good Rakkasan and former 3rd Rakkasan Brigade Commander who led the brigade on the 180 plus mile air assault on the Euphrates Valley during Desert Storm. He also did a good job of commanding the 101st Abn Div (AASLT) in spite of the unsupported allegations of the SLDN. I urge all Rakkasans to E-Mail or otherwise contact the Senate Armed Services Committee to emphasize that MG Clark is a superlative officer who is deserving of promotion and that the SLDN is making a scapegoat of a man who happened to be 101st Abn Div Commander at the time of the unfortunate death of a soldier. Senator Levin is the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee that will consider MG Clark’s promotion. He may be reached at: Senator@levin.senate.gov Other members of the committee (24 of them) may be found at: www.senate.gov/senators Go to Committees to get the members of the Armed Services Committee. Then click on “Contacting via internet” to get e-mail and other addresses. Send a few of these folks a note expressing your thoughts on these scurrilous accusations by the SLDN. Also let them know your positive feelings about MG Clark, our former Rakkasan Brigade Commander. Rakkasan Regards, Scott —————————————————- Subj: U.S. SENATOR CARL LEVIN (D-MI), RANKING Date: 10/11/02 6:16:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: Big Apple187ARCT To: Senator@levin.senate.gov. Honorable US Senator Carl Levin; I am the president of the Big Apple Chapter of the Rakkasans 187th Infantry. I have been informed that Major General Robert Clark is before the Senate Armed Services Committee of which you are the Chairman. I am writing in behalf of this Generals promotion to Lt. General. Major General Robert Clark being not only an officer of the highest caliber he is, was and will always be a Rakkasan. The Rakkasan designation is a standard of Trooper that is equated with Bravery and Honor (par excellence). The General has shown his outstanding worth with and as the 3rd Rakkasan Brigade Commander who led the Brigade on the 180 plus mile air assault on the Euphrates Valley during Desert Storm. He did a par excellent duty job of commanding the 101st Abn Div (AASLT), He has been thrown before the enemy of our country and has proven his valor and devotion to his Country. In this time of faltering loyalties a bond of Honor was formed between this Trooper and his allegiance to duty. Acknowledging this faithfulness of command is paramount to our continued victories and camaraderie of our troops. Past, Present and Future. Major General Robert Clark acquired the respect and devotion of the Rakkasan Regulars and that of our esteemed Association and it’s members. The 101st ABN Division and Rakkasan Regiment (187th Infantry) lost 2 young soldiers (killed) this morning in a training accident at JRTC. Please pass the word to all Rakkasans and let them know we are doing fine, are coming together in this time of grief, and will be having a memorial ceremony on our return to Fort Campbell. More to follow — one soldier married with a local wife (and brother in 3-187 Inf) — please contact Brenda or Lisa Preysler for specifics (2-187 Inf soldiers involved). Lisa is coordinating meals, and specific needs of the family. Rakkasan! Mike Linnington

Frank Lilly (San Diego,CA) and I have been attempting to contact a buddy of ours from Maryland who spent more than twenty in the armed services. I have computer knowledge and have had no success to this date. His name is as follows: David L. Steward After we came back from Japan via “Operation Gyroscope” , he went to the 82nd Airborne. Frank Lilly said he last saw him in Special Services where he coached Boxing, Football, etc. and may have at one time been associated with the 555. Give a write if anyone knows this Rakkasan.

I took infantry basic with the 89th F.A. Bn.(11th Abn) in late May 1953 and upon completion was assigned to Svc.Btry/675 F.A. Bn. (11th Abn) and proceeded to Jump School at Ft. Benning in November 1953. Participated in “Operation Ski Jump” at Camp Hail, CO in February 1954. Upon our return to Camp Campbell I received orders for duty in Japan with Svc. Btry/674 Abn.Bn./187th ARCT. First Sgt. John Bell & Lt. Tiger Jones were the troopers in charge until Lt. Marion F. England replaced Lt. Jones near the end of July ’54. Shortly later First Sgt. Bell returned to the states and M/Sgt Hoffman took the reins until First Sgt. Howser (came from AAA/187)became the man in charge with the backing of SFC Jim Crocker. The battery returned via “Operation Gyroscope”in July ’55, we were at Ft. Bragg until February 1956. Whereupon, we left for Fort Campbell, KY and trained new troops for the 101st Abn. Div.. On May 18, 1956, I said farewell to a great bunch of guys, a great Fort Campbell and those fabulous civilians in Hopkinsville (none better). Was in the Army and Marines reserves from 5/56 to 3/59 and on March 25, 1959 I signed up for four years with the USMC. Spent 13 months in the Far East with Fox Co. 2 Bn. 3rd Marine regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Shortly after returning to the states, I caused some trouble and to be subdued, I finally received a tryout with Force Recon Pathfinders in May 1961. We static lined and did freefall from every Aircraft, including Jets, that the Marines officers flew. I left them 30 days prior to my discharge of March 1963. Obtained a private pilot’s license and flew for 12 1/2 years, mostly in California upon discharge. I came from Massachusetts but am now retired in Nevada. While with the Army Airborne, I was called “Baby Austin” as I joined up 15 days after I turned 17. I have contacts with at least 10 troopers who I served with while a member of Svc. Btry.674/187th. Feel free to drop me line, even if you served in the Corps……
What’s up? I served from November 1988 to October 1991 in Delta, 3-187. If anyone that I served with sees this, give me a yell. Later, Big Lou or sometimes Little A.

Got the site from “Pete” Peterson of 187th … looking for info about brother-in-law now deceased, Sgt Andrew Ricciardelli…served 187th Medical Co, Korea 1950-52.Earned among others, Korean Service Medal w/5Bronze Service Stars, 1 Bronze Arrowhead. Am writing a book (opening attached) about the guys I knew who served in Korea. I was in 2nd Cav Regt Constabulary in Germany on Czech Border patrol. Hope you can help. Need to know if and when the jumps in Korea were made so I can validate his participation. Hope you can help. God Bless us all. The Forgotten Generation…Korea 1950-1953 Memoirs of a hero. The chapters you will read are pulled from conversations and tapes from Cpl. Frank Chimera and put into form with the writer. In some cases his words were put into real life moments, as they happened. Frank has been confined to a wheelchair since l953…many years more than the Doctors in Korea, Japan, Hawaii and both the Naval Hospitals in California and the Army and Veteran Hospitals in the US expected. Life expectancy, as described to Frank by his immediate Doctors, was 15 to 20 years. The fact that he has managed to survive these expectations is a credit to his will to live, his lovely wife Pat, their children, the Medical Profession and certainly not lastly, God, in which Frank and his family, have great belief. We are part of the forgotten generation. Born after the depression of the late 20’s and spaced between the returning GI’s of WW II, the baby boomers and the Vietnam War, which was declared a war, even though it was unpopular. I have never remembered a war in history that would kill thousands or millions of people, called popular. No accurate records on casualties for all involved, exist on the war that was never declared a war that lasted 37 months.

SSG James J. Kolb, Good to hear from you Sgt. Are you presently in Campbell? We are expecting to go there for the annual ceremonies. We here are all praying for the Troopers. This conflict will be a long and unpopular type of action but it seems we as Americans have to protect not only by defending but by aggression. Finding our enemies in this era of world diversification is a tough piece of work but that’s what YOUR about the new troopers of a different Modern War Machine. Your tasks are monumental and never before tested. We support and Pray for all our troops and their Victory over oppression and the vicious guerillas with a misconception of life and the real meaning of freedom and justice.

I love this site. My husband is a Rakkasan and deployed. He loves his job and he loves his country. We went through so many deployments, but this one somehow seems different. I am going to be strong for him. I wanna thank each and every one who is supporting our troops. We have some Golden Rakkasans in our FRG Meetings and it is great to know there are people out there who care because they have been there. I hope this will be over soon so our guys can come back home where they belong. But I support them all the way.

My Fellow Rakkasans, It is fast approaching the Holiday Season and again the families of our lower ranked Rakkasans are in jeopardy of having little food on their tables for the holiday season. Many more of our young soldiers are now coming in the army married and some married with children, different from our Army days. This is the second year that the Samurai Chapter will help our active duty commanders wives make sure that those in need have a ham or Turkey and other foods for the holidays . Many folks in various chapters last year said “if our chapter members would have heard about it they would have donated”. Rakkasans, here is YOUR chance; I will be sending this to as many chapter Presidents and members as possible and hopefully help all the needy Rakkasan families, not just some. Make Checks payable to HHC 3 Brigade FRG and send Donations to Mrs. Brenda Linnington, 1558 Creek Loop, Ft Campbell, KY 42223. Thanks in advance and have a Great Holiday Season ! Rakkasans, I received the following information concerning our Medal of Honor Recipient Rudy Hernandez who is in the hospital after a fall in his home. Please take the time and send him a card at home. Bob Nesbitt Bob, talked to Steve Sosa yesterday and this is the latest on Rudy. He is still in the hospital today will be three weeks. He is in ICU at Womack Army Medical center here at Fort Bragg. Rudy fell at home early in the morning and struck his head three weeks ago. he had surgery about 11 days ago and is doing better now. He was started on solid food 3 days ago and the doctors said if he keeps improving they may release him to go home Friday or Saturday. He has a phone in his room and I verified that he can receive calls if needed but it would probably be best if cards were sent to his home, because he needs plenty of rest. I also have a son Brandon Schuler serving with the 187th / 3rd Bat. in northern Iraq. I found address for association in Michigan and see if they can also assist me. Any information passed to me would be greatly appreciated. Just starting the search and not sure where to look. Bob Schuler

Despite being wounded twice he returned to carry the wounded out and was mortally wounded by enemy small arms fire as he carried the last wounded from the ambush. Billy was a medic assigned to B Company. He was the best friend anyone could have in a bar fight or a fire fight. A paratrooper through and through he will never be forgotten. I was there when he died and he is with me to this day.

Great page, I was in D Co. 1/187 in Desert Storm. Thanks a lot. I will be applying for membership in the National Ass. soon. My National Guard unit just got activated and will be deploying to Iraq soon. Take care and I will see you guys soon.
FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Planeloads of “Screaming Eagles” from the 101st Airborne Division will begin returning home to their base on the Kentucky-Tennessee border in January, the division announced Tuesday. A small group of soldiers is expected to return in mid-January to help with the process followed by planeloads of troops later in the month, said John Minton, a public affairs officer. It is expected to take until April to get all the soldiers and equipment home to Fort Campbell, 50 miles northwest of Nashville. About 20,000 from the air assault division have been fighting in Iraq. The division started deploying in February to Kuwait. It fought in major combat in the war then settled in northern Iraq to help rebuild the country. Fifty-nine soldiers from Fort Campbell have been killed in the war — 57 of them from the 101st. The division has said the soldiers would likely return in February or March.
I am looking for people who served with Frank W. Collins in Vietnam between 1962 and 1968. I have a copy of his DD214 but are unable to obtain an original from the archives. For anyone that can substantiate his presence there, I would be deeply grateful for a statement so that his medals can be awarded posthumously.
There is a new movie that has opened called ‘BIG FISH.’ It is the only picture depicting a trooper played by EWAN McGREGOR making a jump in Korea in 1950. He is also seen wearing a Patch of the 187th ARCT rimmed with cross stitching. One of our members, John Bucemi, has a son who is a Hereditary member. His name is STEVE BUSCEMI who stars with ALBERT FINNEY and DANNY DEVITO. I am looking forward to seeing it myself. Hats off to Columbia pictures the producers RICHARD D ZANUCK, BRUCE COHEN and DAN JINKS and to Director TIM BURTON and the great actors for taking the time and effort to enhance the Greatest Airborne Unit in Military History by helping to keep the Spirit of the RAKKASANS who are now the 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne/Assault Division who are now serving in Iraq.
I am a member of the 187 Association, Torii Chapter (Ft. Campbell area, although I live in Georgia). In the Fall 2002 issue of the Shimbun, there is a photo on page 53 of 1SG Austin Harjo, but there is no indication which Chapter he belongs to or where he lives. I copied all the email addresses from the inside front cover of the Fall 2003 issue and they are listed on this email. If I don’t find Harjo this way, then I will write the other chapters by snail mail. Harjo and I umpired baseball together in USAREUR during the mid 60’s. He was one helluva fine umpire. I have not seen or heard from him since he was stationed in Baumholder in the 8th Infantry Division in 65-66. He was a first sergeant and I was a staff sergeant, wearing the same chevrons I wore as a sergeant. I shall appreciate anyone letting me know how I can reach him, or who will provide my address to him. Fred Marshall Jr. Command Sergeant Major U.S. Army, Retired
Site is beautiful. Would be nice if more chapters would do one.

Forwarded Message: Subj: Fw: Unveiling of Rakkasan Memorial, DMOR Ceremony, HCOR/HCSM Ceremony, and Bde Change of Command Date: 5/13/04 12:23:20 PM Eastern Daylight Time Pleasse forward this info on to any Paratrropers or ex Trooperes you may come in contact with. Thanks: ABN. “ALL THE WAY !.” Subject: Unveiling of Rakkasan Memorial, DMOR Ceremony, HCOR/HCSM Ceremony, and Bde Change of Command Greetings Rakkasans and friends of the 187th Infantry: Everyone: Please forward to your Rak email distro lists Greetings from Fort Campbell! We’re in the final stages of planning June’s events. Hard copy invitations will be mailed next week for the events of 21-22 June 2004, when we will be honoring our fallen Rakkasans from Operation Iraqi Freedom, honoring 2004’s Distinguished Members of the Regiment (recently elected), and inducting a new Honorary Colonel and CSM of the Regiment (LTG Kinzer replacing MG Bethke as HCOR, and CSM Counts replacing CSM Crowe as HCSM). We will be mailing hard copy invitations to families of our fallen comrades, newly elected DMORs, and National Officials for the 187th Infantry Association as well as our HCOR(s) and HCSM(s). We will also be passing invitations to all Rakkasan Chapter Presidents for them to publicize at their Chapter Meetings, however we will not be mailing invitations to all Rakkasan Association members – our printing bill would be enormous!! That said, we welcome any and all Veteran Rakkasans to attend our events, so please feel free to RSVP, even if you do not receive a hard-copy invitation (email version attached). Our main event will take place on 21 June (1100 hrs) at the Rakkasan Pylon (1st attachment), with a tour of the billets and lunch in the Brigade Dining Facility to follow the ceremony. That evening, we will host a small dinner at Cole Park Commons (old Officers Club) to honor our DMORs and HCORs/HCSMs. On 22 June, at 0900 hrs, we’ll change command of the 3rd Brigade, 101st ABN Division (AASLT) and 187th Infantry Regiment. We moved the time to 0900 hrs to preclude the hottest hours of the day and our having troops out on the parade field in the blazing sun. My weather forecaster predicts either a 95 degree day (hot/sunny) — or a driving rain storm forcing the event indoors. Thanks in advance for all you do for our Regiment. Your active duty Soldiers looks forward to your attendance, and if that is not possible, then at our Annual Reunion in Tucson, AZ in August. Air Assault! Airborne! Ne Desit Virtus! COL Linnington

I noticed the 187 ARCT. Does that stand for the 187 Airborne Regimental Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division??? If so, my father was in the unit. You may have known him. His name, Raymond Norton .If you know him, let me know. Thanks
I am currently researching my grandfathers, Raymond Stefancyk, role in WWII. He served in the 187th Glider Infantry in the PTO. He suffered from a stroke – so as a result he can no longer move or speak. If you could point me in the right direction of where I can get info, and if you know of anyone that knew him – please have them contact me. I am trying to piece together his history, so we will never forget. I have some pictures from his service. He did not talk much about his experiences, and I understand why, but right before he had his accident he started to talk about them. I believe he was in “E” company, not sure though, and believe he was the BAR man – he is posing with it in all the pics. I am majoring in history in college, and am attending school in Purchase NY. Any help would be appreciated, and please spread the word about if any knew him. Sincerely, Bryan Stefancyk

We golden Rakkasans are advancing on all fronts. Preparations are being made have a Rakkasan Association web site and to encapsule all willing chapters. There are some startling yet important areas for conversations between members and emailing of events. This is in the process now and several Rakkasans have volunteered for this assignment. We have to thank several men for the intuition, strength and forseability to move this project. You will hear more in the near future.

To all: Happy Thanksgiving. Just returned from Ottawa, Canada over the holiday and had a mini-reunion of sorts with about 30 Canadian PPCLI Rakkasans who came from all over. I had the pleasure of presenting our final Bronze Star to CAPT. Jeff Wilson at the Canadian Land Forces HQ with their Chief of Staff LTG. Hilliard. COL. Pat Stogran was also there as were many of the gang. It was heartwarming to see them carry on with Rakkasan tradition and to be so proud to be Rakkasans. They are opening an Airborne store in Ottawa and will have a Rakkasan section to it. As we met, many were wearing their Rakkasan garb and related great stories of being at Ft Campbell and in Afghanistan, and look forward to attending future reunions and meetings. Rakkasan is in their blood. Toward the end of the evening, many approached me and, without trying to make issue, asked me why the 4 Canadian soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan with us had not been added to the wall. To say the least, this caught me off guard as I thought it was a done deal. I told them it must be a glitch or a money issue, or simply waiting to ensure all names were gathered…because quite frankly, the thought of it being something else would not dare cross my mind. They appeared to think it may be something else. I told them the fact that they are Rakkasans is undisputed; they were part of the permanent Rakkasan TF in Afghanistan, under Rakkasan Command, fought along side other Rakkasans, received Bronze Stars, presented the 101st combat patch by then MG Cody, presented the Rakkasan combat patch by me as determined by the Association, and if requested, members of the Rakkasan Association. The Rakkasan Combat Patch was laid on the Canadian Flag that draped their coffins as they left Afghanistan. I told them it could not be due to friendly fire because hundreds of servicemen and women died in combat zones from friendly fire. They received Purple Hearts and valor awards and are no less our heroes for paying the ultimate price for their combat deployment in support of our freedom than any other combat casualty or death. It is a soldier’s way to honor all – they were all warriors with the guts to serve. I told them it could not be just because they were Canadian because we are a brotherhood of Rakkasans. CSM Purdy, former CSM of 3/187 INF., is a Canadian Citizen, and I’m sure there are a great many others before and now serving with other nation’s citizenship – so it could not possibly be that. Having said all that, I ask anyone with knowledge to please provide me some information on the issue. If it is a cost issue, and I sincerely hope that it is, I will find or supply the funds myself. If it something else, and I cannot fathom that fact from an organization like ours, I would appreciate whatever explanation could possibly have been made. Rakkasans have always done the right thing, the honorable thing, and have always taken care of our fallen comrades. I know this as fact. Jeannine and I wish you all the best for the Holidays and a great New Year. Rakkasan!

To All, I am sorry that my brothers to North misunderstood what the problem really is. There about is thirteen 101ST Airborne Division Soldiers names not on the pylon for Operation Iraqi freedom. These Soldiers were from 101ST Aviation, 3/320 Artillery, and 311th MI or any other unit that was attached to the 3RD Brigade and not assigned. It is a play on words of a few and it has nothing to do with borders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I Thought I made that clear to Col. Stogren at FT Campbell this past June. I apologize for not making it clearer. There are some on the Board that are saying if their unit was attached their names are not eligible to be on the pylon. I brought this up at the President meeting at the national Reunion this year. Col. In the general membership meeting Col. Bill Weber said that in 1950 that the none Infantry unit were attached but their names are on the wall. I told them that this was wrong and I asked them to compare it to Korean war none infantry unit that had their War Dead’s names on the wall. Gen Wiercinski do you remember the time you and I had when you were Rakkasan 6 getting the names of the Viet Nam era KIAS that were left off the wall. One of the board members told us that they would not go on because it would mess up the wall because the names would be out of alphabetical order. After the long battle the names are on the wall. At the last reunion we had a lame Duck board and now we have a new President and Vice President some new board members that I believe will do the right thing and put all the names on the wall. All our war dead should have their name on the wall of Honor Airborne Rakkasan Frank Arias

Frank et al: When the 187th deployed to Korea as an RCT in Aug 50, the following units were attached (not assigned) to the Regiment: 674 Abn FA Bn A/127 Abn Engr Bn A/88 Abn AA Bn Evac/Amb Plat, 11th Abn Medical Co Other small detachments. Casualties (KIA) from those units that occured prtior to the RCT becoming (Separate) in early ’51, are on the wall and properly so! As are those who were KIA subsequent to the RCT becoming (Separate) and those units less the 674th being re-designated as: Engr Co, 187th RCT AAA Company 187th RCT etc., etc., etc. Thus, the precedent for including KIA from attached units to the 3rd Bde/101 in Afghanistan/Iraq seems obvious to me! Anything less would be an abandonment of our extended RAKKASAN family concept! RAKKASANS Lead the Way!

To: Executive Board, Board Members and Chapter Presidents Subject: Change in the number of days for our Annual Reunion I KNOW THIS IS LATE BUT IF YOU CAN Please RESPOND ASAP. It has been brought to my attention that a number of our members would prefer reducing the number of days for the National Reunion/Muster to five effective days rather than the seven days we are currently scheduling. Any change would not take place until the 2006 Reno reunion. (2005 will remain as scheduled with the 7-day schedule) The reason lies in the fact that the vast majority of the activities on the work of the Rakkasans are concluded in the last three days, but little if none is during the first 2-3 days. The year 2006 Reunion was not picked up by a local chapter as it was almost unanimously voted by the membership to have it in Reno where we do not have a chapter therefore National by the Constitution is obligated to carry out the duties implicit in the Constitution. However, by the good graces of the Angels Over Hell Chapter and the volunteerism of other members the Reunion will be staffed by those who volunteered and have already put in countless hours to perfect the Reno Reunion. The Reunion will attentively run from Sunday through Friday with a Friday departure. We have been assured a very decent room rate with many conveniences. $49.00 plus tax of 9%. After Friday the room rates jumps upward from $85.00 to $119.00 per night plus tax. (Weekends at these resorts are made for the high rollers and various major gatherings such as Auto Shows and various Gambling events.) As planning takes place for 2006 we are looking toward to Sunday through Thursday with a departure of Friday. My concern rests not only with 2006 but future reunions as well. Once a contract is signed that’s what we have to live with. We can continue as we have been or make changes as the membership desires. I ask that you please consider the proposals and e-mail fax or phone so that I might bring up the matter in Hopkinsville at the Chapter Presidents/ Board meeting. 1. Remain with the eight day schedule (Sunday to Sunday) 2. Six day schedule (Sunday to Friday) 3. Six day schedule (Tuesday to Sunday) 4. Five day schedule (Wednesday to Sunday) Let me know your feelings on this matter, which way should we go. Let me have your input and comments. What if any are your reservations. Thanks in advance, Jim Hoeh Phone: 513-481-4045 Cell 513-256-5494 Fax 513-481-1392 Fax 513-481-6887 I HAVE VOICE MAIL SO IF YOU CALL JUST LEAVE A MESSAGE AND I CAN RETRIVE IT.

Would love to hear from any of those guys. Just 17 at the time and only served with them six months, but will always remember them.
I just wanted to thank the Golden Rakkasans for the huge effort put into this site. I served with the Rakkasans from 2000- the summer of 2004 in 3rd bat. I wanted people to know that 3rd bat no longer exists because of the restructuring of the army. I need to do some in-depth research so I can accurately update our unit’s recent history on this site .

The Manhattan Chapter officers wish all its members a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. This past year has been one of great tragedy through out the world and our prayers go out to everyone. During this past year many things have transpired in our Chapter because of one disgruntled member in almost 8 years of my serving you. We were taken to court and maligned called thieves and letters were written to our members with malice aforethought in their distribution. I have shown that these irregularities were unfounded and have cleared our Chapter and my name leaving no areas disputable. The office of President was given to me in votes for several years as no one would run in these contests and the members that attended our meetings all agreed to my entitlement. I maintained this position throughout the years of our very pleasant camaraderie. However the National suggests that to further the Chapters Long and honorable standing that another election should take place in 2005 at our meeting celebrating Los Banos. There fore any one, who wishes to run for the offices in this chapter, They should contact the National Secretary or myself in order to announce their intentions. They can make official their wish to have someone serve the members in an Honorable unselfish way. The contention of the 11th Airborne Division Association is that we were doing a good job and the installation of myself and the other officers in front of past President Walley Stilts and the past Vice President were never questioned at our last two meetings that they attended at Forlini’s Restaurant. I am happy that the National is involved and is aiding in the distribution of mail regarding this event. I have many times in the past said that the younger members should take a hand at running this Chapter. There are many younger troopers who served in Germany and Lebanon. I would hope that this generation would lead the way in keeping this Unit alive. The National is filled up to capacity with age and a gigantic turn around should and must take place. Saying this it is apparent that I no longer will look to guide the Chapter. I will say I took this chore with great Pride and I did hold the name of the Angels alive in NY, when I took the reigns it was only a fallen chapter. It had no one at Leader ship responsibility. With the help of Walter Johnson the only officer left holding the Chapter as such. We up graded the Chapter into a feasible working Chapter. I worked without money and suffered much loss in personal revenue. The Chapters Bylaws prohibited Dues so none were taken. We survived and expanded. I am also the President of the Big Apple Chapter of the Rakkasans. I am proud of this as this was a completely new start. I have a rapport with the whole association and I feel I can better serve and lead this one Chapter. There are too many conflicts in trying to run and serve both Chapters. The National 11th Airborne Division Angels will have to get a President and a slate of officers to run the Manhattan Chapter ergo the need for an election. I leave having the honor of serving the Troopers of the Angels and with a feeling of accomplishment for all that I have done for those Troopers and the Chapter leaving the distinction I brought within the Chapter and the National. We are sending this letter also to remind each member of the upcoming meeting and luncheon. It will be held again at the International Restaurant in Garden City. We had many members say they would like to attend this event there again. The Voting will I assume be here but the write ins I don’t know about these, the National must assume that responsibility. The Date of our affair will be the 6th of March 2005. The hours will be from 1100hrs to 1530hrs. The Cost will be Twelve dollars and fifty cents per person. The menu is varied, as this is an open buffet. This includes Soda, Coffee or Tea. There is a bar there that offers alcoholic beverages to those that are inclined. Smoking of course is not allowed in any NYC Restaurant. The time has come to offer your say into this Chapter for its leadership. Please attend and voice your opinions and participate. I am not running for the Presidency of this Chapter. I have served the members with integrity, keeping the name and principle of Airborne high and ever striving to improve and show our Colors and History again and again with Pride. I did this as best as I could under much duress from persons of dubious intentions politically or otherwise in the past. I pray God grants that this Manhattan Chapters continuance will be given into the proper hands. Robert C. Hodgson 1300L

Dear Mr. Hodgson, Thank you so very much for you reply. I sweat on the typo. I am just glad to be a part of what you older Rakkasans have done. The Rakkasans of today try our very best to not let your deeds go unnoticed. We try to instill the standards, pride and esprit de corps in all our soldiers. I have been in the army over 19 years and have served with every type of infantry unit that the army has had from Ranger, airborne, light, mech and air assault. There is no better unit that I have ever served in than the Rakkasans. The Torii is a beacon in the dark when I have been away from the Regiment. When I was a drill sergeant at Ft Benning (2001-2004) my soldiers would ask what Rakkasan meant. They would hear me give that greeting to one of 12 Drill Sergeants that were Rakkasans that was in 2-54 Inf. They would come into my office and see all the things (patches, insignia, coffee cups) with the history of the Rakkasans. I would try and tell them but they never seemed to get it. Then I realized that me trying to tell someone about us is like trying to tell a virgin what sex is like. They will never know until they experience it for themselves. I had received many letters from my soldiers from Iraq telling me that they know now what it means when one Rakkasan tells another “Rakkasan”. I have had several that took my advice when they asked me what unit to go to at Ft Campbell. I always told them if they are serious about there job go to the Rakkasans. Everyone will know who you are talking about. Many did just that and have found out that I was back and have come to look me up to say “I understand”. A great feeling to know that I have sent good soldiers to the Regiment to carry on the traditions. Sir, hope to see you at one of the reunions here at Ft Campbell Rakkasan! Mike Hessock

Thank you for having this site. I am a Rakkasan from 98 till 04. The recruiting world has sucked me up for right now but I plan to head back to the leader Rakkasans as soon as this duty is over. You have inspired me to re-enlist because of the proud tradition you guys hold, that includes this website. I met a “young man” that is a Rakkasan from the Korean war in White Plains, New York and he gives me faith that the “falling down umbrella” lives within every stallion still living in the Rakkasan chapter. I am a very proud soldier living in the city to have served and plan on serving again in the leader Rakkasan. Thanks for everything you have done and you guys have paved the way for the current Rakkasans to hold such standards.
My Uncle was Sgt Lawrence (Larry) Ruvolo. I am trying to learn as much as I can about the man I never met. He died on May 23 1951 on the road to Inje. If you knew him I would appreciate it if you would contact me…I have just started my research and I know now what a proud soldier he was and what a proud Unit he served with…I am an Army veteran served in Vietnam 69-70 attached to the 25th at Cu-Chi..My Uncle served in E company 187 arct…..50-51, any help would be appreciated..My father is still kicking retired USMC 42 to 64.. he was at Kempo with 1st MAW..he was able to spend time with him before he was killed…he was the last relative to see him alive.. He won the Bronze star…I would like to know what he did to earn it and how he died..

From the President of the BIG Apple Chapter: The Article appearing in the Summer issue of the Shimbun in the Big Apple Chapters Column added without approval regarding the status of RAKKASANS living in the Great State of Hawaii and with in it’s Islands was not sanctioned by this Chapter. It is erroneous and I apology to anyone offended by the lack of writing discipline used by the writer. The last I can be sure of is that 10 members are listed in the RAKKASAN Roosters that are presently enjoying the Island life of our Great State of Hawaii, USA. GOD Bless you all and AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY. Bob Hodgson

All the way, Sir! Question. Does your organization also sponsor the internet program titled – Korean War Casualties, 187th ABN RCT list? Thanks. LTC (Ret) Delton Collins
There is a movie that has opened called ‘BIG FISH.’ It is the only picture I know about that depicts a trooper played by EWAN McGREGOR making a jump in Korea in 1950. He is also seen wearing a Patch of the 187th ARCT with white cross stitching. One of our members, Rakkasan John Bucemi, has a son who is a Hereditary member. His name is STEVEN BUSCEMI. STEVE stars along with EWAN McGREGOR, ALBERT FINNEY, DANNY DEVITO. BILLY CRUDUP, JESSICA LANGE and a cast of many. I have seen it and also bought the DVD. Hats off to Columbia pictures the producers RICHARD D ZANUCK, BRUCE COHEN and DAN JINKS and to Director TIM BURTON and the great actors for taking the time and effort to enhance the Greatest Airborne Unit in Military History by helping to keep the Spirit of the RAKKASANS who are now the 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne/Assault Division. The Troopers are again, I believe alerted for possible duty in IRAQ very soon. I also believe they are at present a part of the rescue mission that was sent to New Orleans. If you see this picture you’ll notice the events put in did occur; such as the sisters, not exactly that way but the situations did happen. Someone dug deep into the files to get things not a lot of people knew. It’s a picture you must see with no interruption. The main character is not the every man but we all at one time or the other possessed those dreams that are facts concealed by lost memories misinterpretations or concealed for our own reasons. Steve’s part gives the picture some of the unexpected and devilish daring events or occurrences in the life of Edward Bloom played by Ewan McGREGOR. DANNY ELFMAN’s music creates a wondrous effect as the web of this flashback life spins into the passions and tall tales of a complex and diversified life of a man who too often tends to bend the fabric of life. Don’t miss it and have an open and giving mind into a fantasy which reels some of us back to a times gone by.

Great website I was in 187 in Korea 1951 till 1953. G Company any one from Goat company?
Rakkasans, this year we have all been inundated with natural catastrophes, and people all over the globe needing our help and mostly we have responded with significant amounts and with haste. Our Rakkasans have been deployed to the war zones and will not be here with us during the forthcoming holidays, however we can be of service to our own warriors, and their families, who as we all know are protecting this nation and the western world from the enemy. The BDE has re-started the Family Readiness Group for ranks E4 and down with certain exceptions for hard hit E-5s. Thousands of Rakkasan families will need some some semblance of order and happiness while their loved ones are in harms way and we ought to help out. We are being given the extreme privilege of helping our brothers in lineage. Since we can’t go to war and help them now, let’s do the next best thing, help their families with Thanksgiving food and Christmas dinners. This endeavor will require money. Send what ever you can afford only if your able. Please put this down as your gift to the Regiment and its present warriors. Make checks payable to “3rd BDE Family Readiness Group”, Send checks to: either Major Ronald O’Bryant, or 1st SGT Patrick Keogh at 3rd BDE HQs, Bldg 6760, Fort Campbell, KY 42223 Forget about the past when this didn’t happen for us, but we now break new ground for the future. HOOAH Irv Weinsoff, Esq. Rakkasan VP
I just wanted to say I enjoyed looking at your site. My husband is currently in Iraq. He left in September. He is a Rakkasan leader stationed at For Campbell. It is his 2nd tour in Iraq. His brother in law is also stationed at Fort Campbell. Thank you for all of your support. We love our Rakkasans and I miss mine very much! God Bless!

Rakkasans, It is with heavy heart that I write to you all again. Rakkasans have fallen in Iraq. Five members of the 3rd Brigade were killed by roadside bombs and five others were injured. This being the week of Thanksgiving it makes it so much harder to handle. Especially for the Families of those who gave their all. Lets all take time to say prayers for all these brave Troopers and their Families. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Rakkasan and Airborne Regards and a Happy Thanksgiving. Bob Nesbitt.
I find it difficult at times to think of other matters when we have our 3rd Brigade in harms way. Yet I know that the Association business must go forward and the membership must be kept informed as to just where we stand and what is taking place within the Association.
At the time of this writing we are informed that nine 187th Troopers (Rakkasans) have made the Supreme Sacrifice, the ultimate measure of devotion to duty, in the fight to bring peace and freedom to the people of Iraq. They join the ranks of the hundreds of Rakkasans who have died in battle in the far reaches of the Southwest Pacific during the World War II, in the barren hills of Korea and the steamy jungles of Vietnam. The families and loved ones of those young men have suffered an irretrievable loss. We share their grief, their anguish and yes, their frustration.
The Division has been able to cover all the soldiers’ services. At the service for Corporal Michael Idaman (3rd Brigade) the 101st provided six honor guard/pallbearers. Also present were 5 members from our “Angels Over Hell Chapter”. Dick and Zelma Goltra, Ken Wingett, and Jesse and Catheine Gutierrez. Mrs. Idaman, despite the loss of her son Michael was very much appreciative of the Divisions presence but to have former 187th Paratroopers attend Michael’s funeral had a special meaning for her. We can still make a difference.
In time, after the last round has been fired and with the fervent prayer that they have not died in vain, we will add their names to the 187th Rakkasan Memorial Wall at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
We do know that battlefield medical technology has advanced far beyond that of past conflicts. As a result more wounded, many with multi-loss of limbs and other injuries that would not have been treatable in the past are returning home.
Eventually all of those wounded will be either returned to duty or be medically discharged. It should be our solemn duty, as Veterans, to demand and ensure that those who are discharged, medically or not, receive the healthcare and benefits that was once traditional.
We must stop the erosion of those benefits by people who have never heard a shot fired in anger.
A matter that I have been asked frequently about and that has been of great concern to the Board of Directors, both present and past, are the disposition and building of the new museum. To be blunt is to recognize that it has been a bit difficult to get the correct and updated information. Each of our two appointed liaisons have worked very hard but could only rely on the information given to them as to the delay in building the museum. One reason was that there is a road being built (Tiny Town Rd.) to the museum and that it was to be completed prior to starting the museum. The second reason given was that there isn’t enough money to complete the construction since many of the donors have not yet fulfilled their pledges that were relied on by the local foundation in charge of financing. To my knowledge the Association has not been privy to any copies of the budget or financial statements so I propose that the museum officers make some documents available so that we have the facts and can then deal with the situation accordingly .The latest information I have received indicates that the exhibit design phase is underway and that actual construction is scheduled to begin early 2007. If all pledges are fulfilled there should be no problem.
February Gathering at Fort Campbell, Kentucky:
The motel where we have had our mini-reunions for so many years has been sold and the new owners don’t seem interested in accommodating us as we have been used to. The Torii and Samurai Chapters have always gone above and beyond to spoil us and make it a special time. Unfortunately, the times and circumstances, (that we can all relate to), require that we make some changes. That is a lot of work and responsibility for a few who are still able to carry the load. We truly appreciate everything they have done for us in the past and I know you all join me in giving them a huge round of applause for all their past services to the Association. They’ve been outstanding! We want to continue the annual reunion at Fort Campbell in February because that is where our roots are and we both give and get tremendous support there. We have a tentative schedule but then it will also be a work in progress.
Lodging will be at the Best Western Hotel (ph#1-270-886-9000) 4101 Fort Campbell Blvd. Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Rooms are being held for the Rakkasans for February 21,22 and 23. Room rate is $59.00, either smoking or non-smoking with 2 double beds. The Hotel is currently holding 30 rooms but they must be reserved by the last of February 2006.

ELECTION YEAR 2006.
Now is the time to step forward for the Association and consider running for one of the nine offices within the Association. All offices are open to qualified members. Think about it, consider it and then let your desires known to the National Secretary. Surely out of 2,500 members we have more than 11 members willing to work for the good of the Association (figures taken from the 2004 election)
To those of us who spent the better part of our teens and early twenties in service to the nation we love and swore to defend in all instances and forever it was a great privilege to serve in one of the army’s great Regiments now upgraded to a Brigade Combat Team. This site is awesome.

Impressive web site for a student of U.S. History and me too (print journalism). I’m sorry Daddy can’t see it with me these days. He’s getting ready to quit this mortal coil over at the VA Hospital. But in his hey-day, he was among you men jumping into the prop-wash. He spoke to me often of the camaraderie and brotherhood that embraced you 187th paratroopers. The last time he stood among many of you was at the Washington DC dedication of the Korean War Memorial. That was the first time I saw a living, breathing man around whose neck swung the Medal of Honor. Rudolfo Hernandez was his name. I’ll never forget his band of azure studded with stars. Daddy said, “Susan I have somebody I want you to meet.” And the first thing that caught my eye was that medal hanging from his neck. Wow. The 187th ARCT was an “all the way” deal for this trooper they call “Rudy.” Perhaps some of you know him. Along with Leonard Ross Fletcher of Emily, Minnesota, Daddy’s life-long closest friend. They met in the 187th and became thick buddies straight-off for some reason. Daddy is a Tennessean and they seem way-out different from those Minnesota Vikings. But in the 187th, I find that nothing keeps you men from the Brotherhood. Something about that static line I reckon. Only you know. My father’s name is William Knox Pearson. Maybe some of you pistols have come across him during your Korean tours. He was a medic during his 187th jumps. Another of Daddy’s buddies was a paratrooper by the name of Gainor. He spoke highly of this man all my life. If you’re out there and can read this, hello from Daddy and me. Once again, I love this web site. It’s a class act — just like the 187th. The Army’s crackin’ finest and you know it. Very respectfully, the proud daughter of a Rakkasan, Susann Helen Pearson
God bless our troops in Iraq. I am proud of my country and my uncle Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II who was killed in Bayji November 19th 2005 and all of his men.

First and foremost, CSM Patton and I would personally like to thank all members of the Golden Rakkasan Association for their gracious support to the 187th Infantry Regiment and 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Rakkasans), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during our deployment to Iraq. The huge out-pouring of packages, letters and cards from the Golden Rakkasans to Soldiers of the brigade as well as the selfless support to our families during the past year has been tremendous. You have greatly affected the morale of all Soldiers of the brigade and we thank you~!
As the brigade begins preparations for redeployment and for the next deployment in 2010, we would like to establish the next Honorary Colonel and Sergeant Major of the Regiment. The primary mission of the Honorary Colonel and Sergeant Major of the Regiment is to “perpetuate the history and traditions of the 187th Infantry Regiment, thereby enhancing unit morale and spirit”. Minimum requirements for each position are as follows:
a. Honorary Colonel of the Regiment: A distinguished retired officer in the rank of Colonel or above who formerly served on active duty in the regiment and not currently serving as Honorary Colonel of the Regiment for a different regiment.
b. Honorary Sergeant Major of the Regiment: A distinguished retired Non Commissioned Officer in the rank of Sergeant First Class or above who formerly served on active duty in the regiment and not currently serving as Honorary Sergeant Major of the Regiment for a different regiment.
The Brigade will accept nominations for both positions through 15 October 2008 and plan to have the confirmation process complete prior to redeployment in mid November. Nomination packets should include a one to two page document that includes the nominee’s biography (must include active duty service in 187th Infantry Regiment); a list of past contributions to the 187th Infantry Regiment or Golden Rakkasans; and why the nominee feels they should be selected for these prestigious positions. Additionally, nominees are authorized to submit up to three letters of recommendation for consideration.
Please forward nomination packets to CPT Latasha Thomas, the Assistant Brigade S1, via email to Latasha.s.thomas@us.army.mil or US Mail to the following address: Commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team (ATTN: CPT Thomas), Bldg 6760, Ashau Valley Road, Fort Campbell, KY 42223. If you have immediate questions please contact CPT Thomas at (270) 798-6542/4236.
Again, thank you for all you do for the Soldiers and families of the 187th Infantry Regiment and 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Rakkasan).

As the brigade begins preparations for redeployment and for its next deployment in 2010, we would like to prepare for the next Distinguished Member of the Regiment (DMOR) and Honorary Member of the Regiment (HMOR) Induction Ceremony which is tentatively scheduled for February 2009.
A DMOR and HMOR nomination board will convene on 25 October 2008 in Iraq to review all nominees. The purpose of the DMOR and HMOR is to promote and enhance the history and traditions of the 187th Infantry Regiment, to promote the war fighting ethos among Soldiers, and to create cohesion among members of the Regiment. Applications for DMOR are open to distinguished Active Army, US Army Reserve, retired officers, warrant officers, enlisted Soldiers, and civilians while HMOR is open to Soldiers, their spouses, and individuals who have contributed to or provided a service to the regiment. Once selected, DMOR and HMOR tenure is indefinite.
The three areas of consideration for DMOR and HMOR selection are the following:
a. Service to the Nation:
(1) For DMOR, this is primarily military service with the Regiment, though it may include outstanding service with other units or other branches of the Military.
(2) For HMOR, this is primarily the nominee’s contributions to the 187th Infantry Regiment while serving in either a military or civilian capacity.
b. Service to the community: Civilian contributions for the public good.
c. Service to the Regiment.
(1) For DMOR this is participation in and contribution to the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Association.
(2) For HMOR this includes any contributions to the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Association, but does not require membership.
The brigade will accept nominations through 21 October 2008 and plan to have the nomination process complete by mid November. Nomination packets should include a one to two page biography that includes but is not limited to the nominee’s service to the nation, service to the community, service to the regiment, and a brief statement on why the nominee feels they should be selected.

ACTIVE DUTY RAKKASAN FAMILIES NEED OUR HELP
DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON!
The holiday season is often a time when less fortunate Rakkasan families find themselves financially challenged. The added stress of the current deployment can make this doubly hard.
The 187th Airborne Association is appealing to the generosity of all Golden Rakkasans to make donations to the Association so as to provide assistance to those Rakkasan families in need; whether it be to purchase the makings for a holiday meal or some other special requirement they don’t have the means for.
The time is now to begin our fund raising and collecting donations to ensure we can provide assistance in the form of gift cards.
Last year the donated amount of $9,055 provided assistance to 177-Rakkasan families. With the increase in gas prices and the cost of living our assistance will undoubtedly be needed again.
To help, make your donation check out to the “187th Airborne Association.” Be sure to write “Troop Support” in the “For” box of your check. Mail your donations to the following address:
Virginia C. Musgrove Treasurer, 187th Airborne Association 461 Hammacksville Road Trenton, KY 42286
All donations will be handled by the 187th Airborne Association. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT)/Rakkasans will provide a screened list of families requiring assistance for this holiday season. The 187th Airborne Association will then purchase gift cards and mail them directly to the families in time for use during the holiday season.
Your generosity is truly appreciated by those Rakkasans needing assistance during the holiday season.

RELEASE 20081103-01 Nov. 3, 2008
IA takes over Combat Outpost Dragon By Pfc. Christopher McKenna, 3rd BCT, 101st Abn. Div. (AASLT)
CAMP STRIKER, Iraq – The Iraqi Army assumed control of Combat Outpost Dragon during a transfer-of-responsibility ceremony Nov. 1. The 1st Battalion, 23rd Brigade, 17th IA Division took the reigns from 3rd Bn., 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
“Over the past year, the Coalition has assisted us in making Yusifiyah a secure area,” said Col. Aman, 1/23/17th IA commander. COP Dragon was formed in 2007 from what was once the Yusifiyah Thermal Power Plant. Coalition forces worked side-by-side with the IA, conducting missions ranging from governance operations to air assaults. “We have worked together with the Iraqi Army since we arrived, and because of it, we are now at a point where a large American presence is not needed in the area,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Rohling, 3-187th Inf. Regt. commander.
During their tour in the area, the 3-187th Inf. Regt. crossed the Euphrates River to establish a military presence in the village of Owesat for the first time since the initial invasion in 2003. “The success over our time here is a reflection of the work the Iraqi Army has put forth, and because of the combined efforts, the area has become self sufficient,” said Capt. Michael Cooke, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3-187th Inf. Regt., personnel officer.
COP Dragon was the largest base transitioned from CF to the IA. “Today I can stand here and say that the ‘Triangle of Death’ is now the ‘Triangle of Life,'” Rohling said. “We are ready and willing to make sure the Yusifiyah area remains safe after the departure of Coalition forces,” Aman said. “I cannot express enough gratitude for the work the American forces have done with us since last September.”
Aman said the IA plans to continue work toward sustaining security and stability in Yusifiyah.

Subject: Honorary Colonel and Sergeant Major of the Regiment Nominations
Please forward nomination packets to CPT Latasha Thomas, the Assistant Brigade S1, via email to Latasha.s.thomas@us.army.mil <mailto:Latasha.s.thomas@us.army.mil> or US Mail to the following address: Commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team (ATTN: CPT Thomas), Bldg 6760, Ashau Valley Road, Fort Campbell, KY 42223. If you have immediate questions please contact CPT Thomas at (270) 798-6542/4236.
Again, thank you for all you do for the Soldiers and families of the 187th Infantry Regiment and 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Rakkasan).
